Metadata & cover
Title, authors, series, publisher, language, date, tags, description. Plus a check that reads the book and suggests fixes: you decide which to apply.
EPUB editor · entirely in your browser
Colophon is an EPUB editor that lives entirely in your browser: metadata, typography, footnotes, OCR, images, accessibility. No account, no uploads — your book never leaves your device.
Chapter I — The flow
From a crumpled EPUB to a tidy file, friction-free.
Drop your EPUB in or pick the file: it's opened and analyzed in your browser, zero uploads.
Metadata, typography, notes, OCR, images: see what can be fixed and preview what changes before it does.
You download the cleaned-up, lighter EPUB, ready for the reader of your choice.
Interlude — Before & after
A book fragment, before and after one pass of Colophon.
Chapter 1. The beginning
«This is a text with double spaces, wrong dashes and broken notes¹.»
Words at the end of a line are bro-
ken because the book came from a scan.
Chapter 1 — The beginning
«This is a clean text, with proper dashes and working notes¹.»
Words at the end of a line have been rejoined, because the book came from a scan.
Chapter II — The features
Each feature is a different ruler for straightening your book. You choose where to run it.
Title, authors, series, publisher, language, date, tags, description. Plus a check that reads the book and suggests fixes: you decide which to apply.
Proper quotes («…» or English), typographic apostrophes, real ellipses, no double spaces, dialogue lines with a proper em dash.
For books born from PDFs or scans: rejoins hyphenated line breaks, stitches interrupted paragraphs back together, removes stray page numbers. "Analyze" shows you everything before touching a thing.
Checks note references, adds return links, renumbers irregular notes and turns them into pop-ups on EPUB 3 readers. Broken links? Gone.
Finds headings written as plain text (bold, uppercase, "Chapter 3") and turns them into real headings: table of contents, navigation and accessibility suddenly improve.
Removes useless spans, imposed styles and empty paragraphs left behind by Word and converters. The text doesn't change, the file slims down and your reader can breathe.
Delete texts, replace with custom rules, match case if you like and — for the brave — regular expressions.
Recompresses images to shrink the file, swaps the cover and embeds the fonts you're licensed to use: the book looks the same on every reader.
Finds words that aren't in the dictionary and suggests corrections. Italian and English; proper nouns, out of respect, are left alone.
Upgrade to EPUB 3 with a table of contents older readers can still read, language declared on every page and accessibility metadata.
Save your style, cleanup and search settings and reuse them on every following book. Your taste, repeatable.
Chapter III — Privacy
No cloud, no hands on your cover: the EPUB is opened, fixed and saved in the very same place it started from.
Static site: no servers of ours, no database, no logs of other people's books.
The book is opened and rewritten in your browser. Like a calculator, but for e-books.
The file never leaves. You open it, fix it, save it: all on your device.
No email, no password, no "accept the terms". Just nicer books.
Chapter IV — Installation
Install it on your device: icon, shortcuts and automatic updates, bypassing any store.
Margin notes
Nothing. Colophon is free. If that ever changes, we'll write it here — and everywhere else — in very large letters.
No. Open the app, drop an EPUB in, done. We don't even know who you are, which is precisely the point.
Never. All processing happens in your browser: the EPUB never leaves your device.
EPUB 2 and EPUB 3. The EPUB 3 upgrade is optional, and the table of contents stays readable even on older readers.
Many features offer a preview or an analysis that changes nothing, and you only save the new file once you're happy with it. The original stays where it was.
Italian and English, interface included: you pick one on first launch and can change it anytime. The spell checker speaks both, and proper «guillemets» work in any language that deserves them.
Colophon is already online, free, in your browser. One drag and you're in.
